What We Do
As a women’s fund, South Asia Women Foundation India (SAWF IN) supports grassroots initiatives and women’s and trans* person led organisations with financial and non-financial resources. We believe in their leadership and skills to find the most appropriate solutions to address the issues facing them. SAWF IN’s role is to ensure that resources are made available and are reaching the most dispossessed women’s collectives, for the priorities they identify, and the claims they make.
SAWF IN's core objective is to support organisations to scale their strategies for social, and economic empowerment of women and trans* persons. While we support the agenda prioritised by grassroots groups of marginalised women and trans* persons, our current grants on women and trans* communities' rights span across these priority areas:
- Economic participation and economic justice for women and trans* persons
- Elimination of gender-based violence
To achieve this, SAWF IN uses a two-pronged approach :
- Giving small grants to grassroots women's organisations and groups working on social justice, creating a community support network, providing legal support, and advocating for their rights and dignity.
- Offering fellowships to women lawyers and grassroots practitioners and experts from the trans* community to access legal justice, and economic and environmental justice.
SAWF IN also offers ongoing accompaniment support where needed and capability enhancement for institutional strengthening of grassroots organisations. We also engage in feminist knowledge building and research that advances the rights of women, gender non-conforming persons and trans* persons.
